The Caymus Legacy
Nestled within the picturesque landscape of Rutherford, one of Napa’s sub-appellations lies the enchanting Caymus Vineyards, where the Wagner family has been crafting exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon for decades.
Their deep-rooted passion for winemaking and commitment to quality has propelled Caymus Cabernet to the upper echelon of Napa Valley wines. With a signature style that boasts dark colors, rich fruit, and ripe tannins, Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon and Caymus Special Selection have consistently been a force to be reckoned with in the world of wine.
The Wagner family’s dedication to their craft has garnered them numerous accolades, including the prestigious Wine Spectator Magazine’s #1 Wine of the Year in 1989 for its 1984 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Special Selection and the same award for its 1990 Special Selection in 1994 making it the only wine to win this award more than once.
With such a remarkable legacy behind them, it’s no wonder that Caymus Vineyards continues to be a shining beacon for Cabernet Sauvignon enthusiasts worldwide.
Founding of Caymus Vineyards
In 1972, after farming their land for over 30 years, the Wagner family established the winery at Caymus Vineyards, marking the beginning of an incredible journey into the world of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Their first winemaker, Randy Dunn had the pleasure of making the initial vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon which they sold for a mere $4.50 per bottle to anyone who would buy it.
The Wagners’ unwavering dedication to quality and innovation has left an indelible mark on the region, inspiring other winemakers to follow in their footsteps.
Caymus Vineyards has become synonymous with exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, earning a reputation as a consistent leader in producing some of the world’s finest wines. Getting the fruit from a combination of the mountains, and the valley floor creating lushness and complexity has been a secret to the Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon since its initial vintage.
The Wagner family’s commitment to excellence is evident in every bottle of Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark in color and bursting with rich fruit and lush aromas of ripe berries, this wine excels in both its youth and maturity.
Chuck Wagner (the son of founder Charles Wagner) took the reigns of winemaking and has passed it on to his children Jenny Wagner and Charles Wagner who continue the family tradition of making exceptional wine for Caymus and their family of brands.
Caymus Cabernet offers layered complexity that sets it apart from other top Napa Valley Cabernet wines, making it a must-try for any wine enthusiast.
Generations of Winemaking
The Wagner family’s immense passion for winemaking has been passed down through generations, creating a steadfast commitment to quality that has been the bedrock of their success.
Their unique approach to winemaking emphasizes the significance of blending and aging, allowing them to create some of the most sought-after wines in Napa Valley.
This dedication to their craft has not gone unnoticed. The Wagner family has received numerous awards and recognition for their wines which have them flying off the shelves everywhere.
Their profound impact on the Napa Valley (just 30 miles from San Francisco) winemaking industry has helped shape the region’s winemaking culture and set a high standard for other winemakers to follow.
The Art of Crafting Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Creating a masterpiece like Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon is no small feat. It requires a meticulous and refined winemaking process that combines tradition with innovation.
From harvesting to bottling, each step is carefully executed to ensure that the final product is nothing short of perfection.
But what exactly goes into crafting this luxurious and flavorful wine? Let’s delve deeper into the art of creating Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon, exploring the vineyard practices, fermentation and aging techniques, and the blending and bottling processes that come together to create this extraordinary wine.
Caymus Vineyards employs sustainable farming methods, ensuring that their grapes are grown in harmony with the environment. They have developed innovative techniques for managing the exposure of the vine’s leaves and fruit to the sun, allowing for optimal ripening and flavor development.
The harvest season for Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon typically runs from August to October, with the grapes sourced from eight incredible sub-appellations in Napa Valley.
The vineyard practices at Caymus play a crucial role in shaping the signature style of their Cabernet Sauvignon. The rich fruit and ripe tannins that define Caymus Cabernet are a direct result of the meticulous care and attention given to the vineyards.
From the valley floor, where lushness abounds, to the hillsides providing backbone and structure, the unique terroir of Napa Valley contributes to the exceptional quality of this remarkable wine.
Fermentation and Aging
After the grapes have been hand-picked and sorted, they undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Although the specific details of the fermentation process, such as the duration and temperature, are not available, we know that this step is crucial in transforming the grapes into the delicious wine we all know and love.
Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged in oak barrels for 16 months. This aging process is of utmost importance as it imparts unique flavors and complexity to the wine. The oak barrels not only add depth and character to the wine, but also soften the tannins, making it even smoother and more enjoyable to drink.
This careful balance of fermentation and aging is a key component in crafting the luxurious and captivating flavor profile of Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon.

My First Caymus Vineyards Experience
When my wife and I were new to wine and not familiar with the importance of reservations for wine tasting in Napa, we showed up at the winery on our anniversary to taste some wine and maybe buy a bottle to sit and drink.
We were greeted in the parking lot by an employee who asked us if we had an appointment for a tasting. Of course, I told him no, and then asked him if we could just purchase a bottle and sit on the property and drink it. To my surprise, the employee explained that they did not have a license for us to buy a bottle to drink on the premises.
Disappointed, my wife and I decided to just walk in and buy a wine to use for our anniversary celebration. We selected a Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon (pictured above) that we enjoyed as we celebrated our anniversary years later.
